Whoa! The Catholic Church is nothing but an organized crime family, a racket, and a con-game. Nothing it says on any subject can be believed. There is no basis for any ''faith'', with or without alleged ''evidence''. Europe in the Middle Ages was full of claimed relics, fragments of wood from the Cross, nails used in it, etc., and the only thing unusual about this one is that some superstitious folks are still foolish enough to believe it when most of the other fakes have been forgotten.

There is no need to bother with mind games like ''How was it done?'' or ''Who did it?''. It was a fake in an age of such fakes.

Shermer "In this article I would like to make two points. First, the Shroud of Turin should not be a substitute for Christian faith in things not seen and used as evidence of Jesus’ Resurrection. Secondly, and admittedly an untestable hypothesis, the argument that the ingenious scientist/artist Leonardo da Vinci crafted the Shroud is compelling and intriguing."

Me - Based on all the science I've read, it takes a HUGE AMOUNT OF SELECTIVE ATTENTION to make the argument that medieval forgery is 'compelling' let alone 'intriguing.'

I don't really care if the Shroud is authentic or not, but following the so-called 'skeptical' treatments of this issue consistently suggests that something other than objective scientific inquiry is at premium. Ergo, WTF was up with Oxford and British Museum for withholding the Shroud study for over 30 years, until they were finally forced to by freedom of information?

Just curious, Mr. Shermer, over those last few decades did you ever speak out for or against withholding data on this matter?

Or, have you - a leading skeptic-influencer - remained silent over those 3 decades?

I'll assume that a 'no' means that you never really concerned yourself with that matter. However, if you chow me a quote from the past, I'll gladly reverse on this.
